Athlete Devotional – July 5th, 2025

2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

Athlete Devotional Reflection
As athletes, we train our bodies relentlessly—but how often do we train our minds according to God’s Word?

Paul’s letter to the Corinthians reminds us that the battle is not just physical. It’s spiritual and mental. We face voices of doubt, fear, and comparison every day—some from others, but many from within. Scripture isn’t just encouragement—it’s a weapon. Paul says we must “take every thought captive” and submit it to Christ. That means our mindset must be shaped not by our circumstances, but by God’s truth.

This isn’t about positive thinking. It’s about obedience. When lies tell you you’re not enough, the Word tells you you’re God’s workmanship. When fear says you’re going to fail, Scripture says God did not give you a spirit of fear. You can’t always control the thoughts that enter—but you can decide which ones stay.

Taking thoughts captive is a discipline. Just like training your jump shot or your 40-yard dash, it takes repetition and resolve. Let God’s Word be your mental training ground.

Application
Before practice or competition today, pause. Identify one thought that doesn’t line up with Scripture—and speak truth over it.
