A lot of the time when illness or injury set in the first thing you want to do is figure out how to get healthy, but we often approach this with too narrow of a view. We forget just how connected everything is in our lives. We start to think of how to improve your health with outside the box thinking when the traditional ways stop working. The same way how an injury to your ankle can affect your hip is the same way that our overall lifestyle can have a massive impact on our day to day health. Things like stress make us ill, but we rarely take the time to consider this. We are going to go over some key areas in your life that are important improve if you want to be healthy in the long run.
How to Improve Your Health – Housing
I never once took the time to consider how housing can play a role in our well-being. For example, you could be allergic to dust and to live in a house that is dusty beyond reason. There could be mold in your home or even worse you could be in a situation where you don’t have proper shelter at all. If you are a student-athlete and you are reading this, it may feel as if some of these things are beyond your control. The best thing you can do for yourself in a situation like this is move and live with anybody who will take you who has proper shelter.
When families lack in these areas, and the situation does not seem to be changing, you have to take it upon yourself to do the hard thing and make a change. Otherwise, it will be difficult for you to excel health wise. Housing and environment are the most overlooked aspects of healthy living. Many people think what they need to get healthy is pills, and surgeries when in reality they require a change in environment.
How to Improve Your Health – Nutrition
Many health-related issues can be deal with by a change in diet. The problem is that we love quick and accessible food, but these quickly available foods are often not healthy for our bodies. These processed foods that are full of chemicals and other crap, are slowly killing us. The best way to fix this is by trying to eat more fresh food at any cost. The goal when shopping at a grocery store is to stay alongside the outside of the grocery store. The food on the outside of the grocery store tends to be fresh food that spoils. If you get most of your food walking through the isles in the middle, the chances are that the food is more processed.
When it comes to nutrition we could get complicated, but we will keep it basic with the list below:
- Cover a quarter to half of your plate with veggies of different kinds and colors
- Replace sugar with fruit and eat different fruit
- Cut out junk food
- Decrease consumption of juice by drinking water
That is all you need to focus on. The above four points. Everything else can change based on if you eat gluten if you are vegan and what not. The rules above are pretty much universal and can produce a positive result for anyone. The reason fruits and veggies are so important is because they are loaded with vitamins and minerals that you just can’t get out of processed foods. These minerals help your body to repair and stay healthy.
How to Improve Your Health – Education and Job Opportunities
A lack of education plays a role in health believe it or not. A lack of education leads to lower income and a lower income often results in worse nutrition and worse housing. Which means that you struggle in all three health-related areas and it makes it tough to be and stay healthy in the long run. The beautiful thing is that for a student-athlete this is one of the easiest one to control. No more matte your situation or where you live, you can decide to use your education to change your life.
Growing up I knew that my parents could not afford college, so I made sure to work my butt off and stay out of trouble to get a scholarship. I knew that a scholarship was a clear path to being able to live a better life. There are a plethora of schools that offer athletic scholarships for different sports. These scholarships are yours for the taking.
When you graduate with an
education, especially as a student-athlete, you have access to better jobs, that pay more and have better benefits. These jobs mean you stress less about your survival and can have a steady family. All of these things improve your health and the health of those your household.
How to Improve Your Health With Outside The Box Thinking Conclusion

Your health is your wealth, and you want to be able to live your life to the fullest for a long time. You can’t-do that if you rack up an extensive list of preventable health issues.
