“It is a lot harder to do the best you can when you are focused on trying to be the best version of someone else. There is nothing authentic in that, and if it is not authentic, it will never last.”

Being Other People Gained Me Nothing When I Was Myself a Year Later… Learn From The Pros Game Not Actions How Do You Know You Are You?

A lot of growing up realizes your place in this world. Before we can do this, we must find who we are as individuals. Some people think they know, but they have no clue. While others know exactly who they are and where they are going. Things always go the best when you are just true to who you are, and this is no different for athletes.

I will use cover-ground.com as an example. To create it, my brother and I spent plenty of time doing research. We always have to be reading and learning. At first, we had ambitions of being just like other bloggers almost copying some of their ideas.

We quickly realized that was not us, it was far from authentic, and it did not last.  We started seeing true work get laid down when we stuck to blazing our trail in the blogging world. Being different than what people are used to because we are different (cliché but true).

The only reason people behave the same is that they begin to act like those they hang around or they purposely want to imitate someone they want to be like. That is only ok for a bit, but you always have to stay in touch with yourself in life. If someone else has found success doing something, it does not mean that you also will.

Being Other People Gained Me Nothing

I’ll never forget my high school championship when I was a freshman in high school. I’m the type of athlete that likes to talk and be loose before a competition. I don’t speak crap, but I act as if it is just another day at the office. I joke with a laugh, listen to my music and I enjoy myself.  When I got to the meet, I saw other kids with their game faces on. They were like angry statues, no change in their facial expression.

So instead of being myself, I acted like them. I changed who I was, and I joined the museum of statues. What did this do for me? It got me killed in all my races that weekend. I did not lose because my ability was not there. I was ready, but my mind was not.

 When I Was Myself a Year Later…

I came back to the same competition and joked around all meet with my friends. I treated it as serious as the last day of school, and I never lost a race all weekend. It was not a case of being more physically ready; I was just much more mentally prepared.  I learned that I perform the best when I behave like the person I was meant to be. Myself.

Learn From The Pros Game Not Actions

I have seen so many kids act like the pros they see on the television. They want to talk like them, perform like them, and even behave like them. There is a big problem with that. Those athletes are where they are because they stayed true to themselves. They do things that represent who they are. Copying them will not make you famous like them because it has been done and it is not who you are.

How Do You Know You Are You?

If you are not yourself, it will slowly fade out like New Year’s resolution.  If it is not authentic, it will not last.
