I know you’re reading the title of this article confused because it goes against all the advice you ever hear right? Everyone is telling you that you should never give up and that you can do anything and all of that stuff that sounds good for the movies but does not always feel good in real life. The reason it does not feel right is that it is not the whole truth and it was not made for modern society. Modern society demands and wants you to be a QUITTER if you are to find success. The people who know how to be a quitter appropriately go on to have the most success.
The Truth About Being A Quitter
What they never tell you is that to succeed it means saying yes to ONE thing and saying NO to the rest. This often means being a quitter. It means that you start off playing four sports, but eventually, you start to say NO, NO, NO one by one until you can put your focus into one thing.
We live in an attention economy right now. Facebook and Snapchat are fighting for your eyeballs because the more of your eyes they get, the more money that they can take in.
The same is to be said for everything in your life. Everything wants your attention. Your parents, school, your gf/bf, your friends, your other family members, your sports, your coaches, the business you want to start, the job you work at. All of these things want a piece of you, but you like everyone else only get 24 hours in one day.
- Where do you put your focus during those 24 hours?
- Does each place get enough focus to be successful?
We live in a world of half commitments now. A lot of kids come out to track practice where I coach, and they want to show up now and then and hope to get a scholarship. They won’t fully commit because what about their friends, or the person their dating, or their school work?
You see they want to have massive success in every area that they are half committed too, but they don’t want to put in the actual work required for success. Everyone is different, but we can only do so many things well at one time. But we live in a society that loves being busy. Busy is just another way of saying “you say yes to too many things.” You have to cut it out! It is a must!
It Takes Bravery to Say No
You read that right; it requires
bravery to say no. That is how programmed we are to say yes to people. Here is what happens. When we say yes, we feel good at the moment and regret it later. Whereas when we say no, we feel bad at the moment and are happy as ever in the long run. If you want to be a proper athlete focus on being a better athlete. Every year say no to something new. Maybe that is saying no to hanging with your friends, no to parties, no to drinking, no to smoking weed, no to wasting time, no to TV; the list could go on forever.
There is not one person who has things in their life they say Yes to when they should have said no. The number one lesson I learned from 9INE POINT was that focus is critical. I started saying NO to everything else. I stopped doing public speaking, I stopped posting on my social media accounts, everything that I felt like could hold me back in anyway it was put on the back burner. The only thing I had room for was getting this app finished and getting this company in a position to succeed.
Goal Clarity
Get rid of all of the crap! It will become clear what you need to do to succeed.
What have you been doing that needs to stop? Who are you trying to please? The quicker you figure out the answer to these questions, the quicker you will be on your way to success.
A great example of this
focus come when athletes get injured. When you’re injured, it demands your focused because it interrupts your whole life. Sitting in class becomes a pain! You miss days of school, you can’t practice or play, and it changes your entire mood and perspective on life. You realize how quickly your life is going to crap, so you do anything to fix it. The injury now has your full attention. You lock in on it, and you are willing to let everything else slip to get healthy. If you don’t do this, the injuries tend never to go away. You can’t half commit to rehab.
This is the level of focus that your life demands! The question is will you answer its call.
