Shin splints are a nagging overuse injury often found from doing many different sports that can lead to stress fractures. It never starts out with immense pain. What is Kinesio Tape?

Kinesio Tape is designed to provide support to soft tissue while also not restricting the natural range of motion as conventional athletic tape can. The tape is stretched before applied to the skin and then helps life the skin up to help reduce inflammation.

How Will a Shin Splints Taping Help?

Kinesio tape helps shin splints because it gives the lower leg some additional support that feels good but it is not restrictive. When you use standard athletic tape to tape shins, it feels awkward on the calves when they expand from flexing or when you dorsiflex your foot. The tape also sits on the flat surface of your shin bone to help improve circulation in the area.

Shin Splints Taping and the How to?

There are many ways to go about taping different injuries. If you want the best ways of doing it, you need to see a healthcare provider make sure things are done right. The picture shown below is one of the most comfortable tape jobs for shin splints to do on your own.

  • Step 1 – the Cut piece of Kinesio tape that are a few inches short of being the length of your shin bone.
  • Step 2. Cut a smaller strip to wrap around your high ankle
  • Step 3. Cut a third strip that is a bit longer to wrap around your calves
  • Step 4 – Peel of one of the pink stips pictured and stretch it a few inches, so it covers your entire shin and places it gently on shin bone and over your posterior tibialis.
  • Step 5. – Wrap two smaller piece of tape two inches from the bottom of the pink tape
  • Step 6 – Wrap the second piece about an inch above the first one

If you want to have more complicated tape jobs done or if you don’t want to do the one above yourself you can find healthcare providers who can help you out. There are a few benefits to doing this. The first is that most healthcare providers have Kinesio taping as a side skill meaning that there is a lot more they can offer you to help your shin splints.

Shin Splints Taping – What If You Can’t Do It Yourself

Sometimes you can put tape on your shins all you want, but a muscle or bone is in pain because another area is not working or because it is protecting you. With the hips, for example, your back may be hurting because your psoas is doing too much work and it is also tight. The psoas may be doing too much work because your other hip flexors are not activating correctly. The chain reaction could keep going.

Sometimes you need the help of a sports medicine provider. Sports medicine providers are used to working with athletes that need to get results quickly, to get back on the field. If you are not an athlete, I am sure that you still want quick results.

There are many different options you can go with when looking for a provider. You could get a chiropractor, massage therapist, physical therapist or many other options. The key is finding someone you trust and that you are excited to work with.
