As athletes, we go through our ups and downs, just like everyone else. In those times, we have to learn how to push ourselves through those tough workouts, stay motivated when our team is down late in the game, or when life gets tough, and we feel like we have nothing left in the tank to give. In those moments, yes we need to dig deep within ourselves, but that becomes easier when we have faith that God help us through any situation.
The cool thing is that the Bible has a verse for almost every situation we may encounter. This series of Athletes Favorite Bible Verses features Professional Basketball Player Charles Baines 4 favorite Bible verses. Check out these verses that inspire him to Work By Faith.
1. Philippians 4:13
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:13 reminds me where my strength comes from at times when I might be missing shots or may not be playing to my standard on the court.
2. Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 I use to remind myself that God is with me and that he is for me no matter the opponent I am facing.
3. Matthew 5:16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
One of the reasons why I picked Matthew 5:16 is because this is the reason why I play the game of basketball is to bring glory to GOD.
4. Ecclesiastes 9:10
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.”
Ecclesiastes 9:10, reminds me to always work twice as hard because I am doing it for a greater purpose than myself.
For Charles, his faith is the reason why he held on so long. His faith is why he goes so hard for what he does. Without his faith, he said basketball wouldn’t even matter. It’s athletes like Charles Baines that reminds us at 9INE POINT and athletes around the world to Work In Faith. It’s bigger than us.
