Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”
Biblical Context
God spoke these words to Zerubbabel, who was rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem. The project felt small, slow, and insignificant compared to the glory of the original temple. People looked down on it. But God said, “Don’t despise this. I rejoice to see the work begin.” The size didn’t matter to Him. The faithfulness did.
Reflection
We live in a culture that values big moments. Championships, records, viral plays, the highlight reel. If it’s not huge, it doesn’t count.
But God values obedience in small beginnings. Zechariah reminds us not to despise what seems insignificant.
Maybe you’re just starting a new training plan. Rehabbing an injury one painful rep at a time. Serving behind the scenes where nobody notices. Playing on the scout team. Grinding in the weight room while others are on the field. It feels like it doesn’t matter.
But God sees your effort. And He doesn’t just see it, He rejoices in it. Not in your perfection. In your progress and the fact that you showed up today and did the work.
The small stages are where character is forged. It’s where habits are built. Don’t wait for the spotlight to start shining. Show up today with faith and effort. God sees, and He’s celebrating.
Application
What small beginning are you in right now? Commit to doing that work with excellence and joy.
Prayer Guide
Father, thank You for rejoicing in my small steps. Teach me to honor the process and stay faithful even when it feels unnoticed.
Reflect & Share
Encourage someone today who’s in a small beginning. Maybe they’re rehabbing, starting over, or serving quietly. Remind them God sees their faithfulness and celebrates it.
Compete with Faith. Grow with His Word.
