Is It Actual Pain or Is It In The Mind?

A lot of times people will be told that something they are going through is in their head. The problem with saying this is that even if it is in your head, your body cannot tell the difference. If your brain is sending signals to your body that there is a pain, then it is real to you whether there is a reason for the message or not.

There are cases where a healthcare provider will treat you and see no reason for the pain you are experiencing. Maybe you have a throbbing pain in your hamstring, and you feel as if there is a problem there. When you get treated by a healthcare provider, they see no such problem which makes you question if it is in your head. It could be but until you can get the brain to build a new mental map from an old injury, you may continue to feel this way.

The Mind Dealing With Chronic and Acute Pain Throbbing Pain

Adrian Louwe has spoken many times about how the brain reacts to pain. When it comes to Chronic injuries, the brain starts to send automatic signals to the body that there is a pain even when the pain threat is no longer there. If you are dealing with an injury like shin splints. You may get treatment, and everything in your body structurally can be useful, but you have had the injury so long that the brain has not rewired itself yet.

With acute pain, the body will become more aware of the area and take in more details. This can be annoying after because you feel like you notice an think about that body part more. That is good when recovering but once you are healed this can slow you down and make you believe that you are not healed.

Best Ways to Deal With Throbbing Pain and Actual Pain

The best ways to deal with these injuries is to work with healthcare providers. The key is finding the respective healthcare provider that is the best for the issue you are having. Most people start with a general family doctor even when that is not the best option.

For musculoskeletal injuries, for example, the best options are usually sported medicine healthcare providers. The reason is that any healthcare providers capable of taking care of athletes who use their muscles all of the time will have no problem dealing with your throbbing pain.

Some healthcare providers have the skills to help reset the nervous system so that you can help figure out if you are dealing actual pain or if your nervous system is still sending false messages. Here are the types of providers that can help with throbbing pain:

  • Physical Therapist
  • Acupuncturists
